Classics students scoop global classics award  

Rachel Fletcher and Hannah Baldwin have won world-wide prizes for Classics.  This was announced at this year’s CICERO Worldwide Classic at the Annual Conference of the Joint Association of Classical Teachers. Rachel won the prize for Upper Sixth Latin Translation, while Hannah scooped the award for the Cultural Test. Rachel’s success meant that the prestigious Malvern St James Cup, won last year by Haberdashers’ Aske’s School for Girls, went to Collyer’s for the first time. 

Ed Tattersall, Subject Leader for Latin and Classical Civilisation was delighted with the success: “We have a brilliant Classics group at Collyer’s, and Rachel and Hannah have achieved their success against the strongest competition; they were ably supported by Kieran and Katy. Forty-three students came on our Classical Tour of Greece this Easter, another sign of the vitality of the subject and its growing popularity. It’s been a vintage year.”    

The Worldwide competition created a huge amount of interest amongst sixth form students across the Globe, with Australia, France (including Martinique in the Caribbean), Italy, Spain, Andorra, Tunisia and the UK competing. Over 600 students in 20 centres took part in a joint video-conferencing day, which included cultural and Latin tests. Congratulations went to the International Winners Italy, who were closely followed by France and the UK.

The Principal, Dr Jackie Johnston was full of praise: “To win prizes on a global stage is a fantastic achievement and we are thrilled at Hannah and Rachel’s success. They have relished studying Classics and Latin at Collyer’s and we’re delighted that they have done their outstanding ability justice.”

Hannah Baldwin commented: “One of the first steps towards Collyers' Domination of Latin, under the leadership of Mr Tattersall, a living legend!”
