COLLYER’S ASSOCIATION SPONSOR STUDENT’S TAEKWONDO OLYMPIC BID
This week Collyer’s student and British Junior Taekwondo Champion, Guntur Dwiarmein, 17, was presented with a cheque for £300 by Simon van der Borgh, on behalf of the Collyer’s Association. The money is to help Guntur in his quest to represent Great Britain at the London Olympics in 2012.
Guntur was ecstatic: “I’m so grateful to the Collyer’s Association. The money will pay for much needed training equipment and go toward transport costs for World Cup qualifying events in Austria and Finland in the coming weeks”.
Simon van der Borgh was delighted that the Collyer’s Association could help: “As Chair of the Collyer’s Association I am pleased that we can offer some financial backing to Guntur. The money has come from the hard work of Collyer’s parents and we’re hugely grateful for their efforts.” Guntur added: “I’m hoping that Taekwondo will soon be confirmed as an event at the Olympics, as my ultimate ambition is to represent Great Britain in London 2012. I am currently British Junior Champion and train with the Livingwell Taekwondo Academy based in Gatwick. I’m hoping that with more training and competition experience I can achieve my aim. I love it at Collyer’s and without this kind of support it would be extremely difficult for me to pursue my dreams.”
Dr Jackie Johnston, Principal at Collyer’s, concluded: “Guntur is an extremely hard working student and a gifted young athlete. We are so proud of his academic and sporting achievements and I’m delighted that the Collyer’s Association is supporting his Taekwondo ambitions.”
