Students enjoy Capitol's red carpet treatment
The fifth annual Collywood Film and Television Awards Ceremony at The Capital Arts Centre in Horsham celebrated the achievements of the most skilled and creative Media and Film Studies students.
Jonathan Nunns, Subject Leader for Media Studies, was delighted with another hugely successful night: “This is a brilliant show case for our student work and I am utterly flabbergasted that yet again our students have maintained the exceptionally high standards of previous years. Our new facilities have helped to raise the bar, but the success is down to the hard work of our creative students”.
The red carpet evening included a paparazzi photo call and a range of prizes presented by teachers, ex students and the Manager of The Capital Arts Centre, Michael Gattrell and his Deputy, Michelle Woods.
During a glitzy night of high drama, the Best A2 Film was won by David Ackroyd, Ria McCormick, Sam Morris and Rosy Rudkin for their production of “2/3”. Best TV Personality went to star of the future Stefan Hughes (Jungle Bungle). Best A2 Media prize, for “Are you smarter than a chilli pepper?, was awarded to Emma Carlyle, Jonathan Hart, Ciara Woods and Jessica Attfield. Hotly tipped Emma Tossell (Kate Nash “We Get On”) won Best Performance.
Stephanie Clifford, Rob Wareing, Hannah Taafe and Drew Taylor were ecstatic to walk away with Best AS Media prize for “The Justice Killer”, while Technical Achievement in Film-making went to Anthony Cielava, Seb Waterson, Elliot Edgecombe and David Morvick for “Streets of Sweat/Sweatfighter”. Technical Achievement in TV was awarded to Aimee Stange, Oli Brown, Fabian Roch and Katie Arthur for “Faux News”. The much anticipated People's Choice award, voted for by the Collyer’s public, was won by Nick Robins, Matt Symes, Harry Magnus and David Barber for Bloc Party “Flux”. Best AS Film went to Thomas Blackwell, George Brittain, George Kourkoulos, Peter Morgan and Rob Wareing for “Dark Room (Cellar)”.
Media teacher Stuart Andrews was thrilled: “I always get a great buzz from Collywood, the energy the students bring to the event is infectious. The work on show was fantastic and a great time was had by all.”
A number of ex-students, now studying Media and Film at university and en-route to eventual careers in the industry, attended to discuss their experiences and provide inspiration to the current generation of A Level students.
Jonathan Nunns commented: “It was great to see some old, familiar faces from the past who are now building careers in the media industry. The overwhelming feeling among them was that the current generation of students have great potential to succeed in the competitive media industries.”
Collyer’s Principal, Dr Jackie Johnston was full of praise for all involved: “Huge thanks must go to Michael Gattrell at The Capital Arts Centre for once again actively supporting local talent. He and his team have worked tirelessly with our Media and Film teachers to put on another first class red carpet event”.
Mark Ramey, Subject Leader for Film, added: “The Collyer’s media and film team are incredibly proud of our students. Some of the work was broadcast quality. You can’t ask for much more than that!”
