Professional dancer Ana Dueñas led some lively Flamenco Workshops at Collyers on Monday, as part of the college’s Rag Week. Dance and Spanish students learnt to dance basic flamenco with “palmas y jaleos”.
Ana Dueñas León was amazed by the outstanding dancing expertise on show: “The students thoroughly enjoyed the workshops and demonstrated how talented at dancing they are. I was really impressed that they managed to dance an extremely challenging choreography by the end of the sessions.”
Margarita Mortimer, who is Subject Leader for Spanish, was thrilled: “Ana’s wonderful workshops have really helped to give the students a vital insight into Spanish Culture, which is something that has been the key to the success of the course. It was also a great opportunity for the college’s gifted dance students to showcase their talents!”
Last week, students including those studying adult education courses at Collyer’s, visited the Hawth in Crawley for a performance of Amor en el Jardin (Love in the Garden).
Margarita Mortimer explained: “The evening of performance, poetry and music was inspired by Spain's greatest writer of the 20th century, Federico García Lorca. The students loved the show. It was simply breathtaking!”
Melanie Russell, Assistant Principal, said: “We have outstanding Dance and Spanish departments and events like these are what make education at Collyer’s so special!”
