About the subject
The course is suitable for students who already have a GCSE in Japanese. They have a weekly lesson of 90 minutes in their first year, continuing until December of their second year. They will need to have consolidated their knowledge of basic grammar, know about 100 Kanji and 800 words, and have the ability to take part in everyday conversation and to read and write simple sentences.
Learning styles
A mixture of Japanese and English in the classroom. Expect a variety of activities – re-inforcement of conversation skills developed at GCSE, regular vocabulary learning and testing, listening exercises, work in reading comprehension.
Subject Combinations and Progression
Useful as a support for any combination of subjects, but particularly Business, Science and Languages.
Subject Modules and Assessment
The Japanese Language Proficiency Test, or JLPT, is a standardised test to evaluate and certify the language proficiency of non-native Japanese speakers. It is held once every year, on the first Sunday of December in SOAS (School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London).
