Photography AS/A Level

Board: AQA
Syllabus: AS Level (5206F), A Level (6206F)

About the subject
Photography is a creative and practical course which combines technical aspects of photographic image making with the aesthetic qualities of images.  It is a course in which students can develop the practical skills to express ideas through the media of photography.  Students will learn to critique other photographers’ work as well as to develop and realise their own art.

Learning styles
Lessons will contain critiques of photographer’s work, analysis of composition, research and independent study.  Technical lessons will take place in the darkrooms, studios and the classrooms which are equipped with computers.  It is expected that students will work independently on projects with teacher guidance.

Subject Combinations and Progression
Photography combines well with many creative and technical subjects.  Typical combinations could be Art, Media Studies, Graphics, ICT and English Literature.  Photography is also offered at degree level for a BA (Bachelor of Arts) and BSc (Bachelor of Science).

Subject Modules and Assessment

A/S - Subject Modules
At A/S, candidates will be introduced to a variety of experiences employing a range of media, processes and techniques appropriate to the chosen area of study. The AQA specification consists of two Units:

Unit 1 - involves the development of a coursework portfolio exemplifying work carried out during the AS course.

Unit 2 - is an externally-set assignment.  The question paper will contain five exciting starting points and the candidate will be invited to choose one.

Both units contain equal marks. A/S Photography is 100% Coursework.

A2 - Subject Modules

Unit 3 - A Personal Study which is based upon an Idea, Issue, Theme or Concern. For this unit the emphasis should be on a self-directed study involving gathering research, making critical and historical analysis, experimenting, developing skills and producing relevant high quality photography. This project, when complete, will be submitted with the Summer Diary, a piece of preliminary work completed over the summer break, containing details of exhibition visits, initial research and results of photographic experimentations.

Unit 4 - Controlled Exam Test which is an externally-set assignment. There will be eight questions to consider as starting points, but only one is to be answered. Incorporated into the test will be a period of preparation time and a fifteen hour practical, taken over two days.

Both units contain equal marks. A2 Photography is 100% Coursework
