College hosts Science Technology Engineering Maths event
This week Collyer’s hosted a major event for the scientific ambassador’s of the ‘STEM’ (Science Technology Engineering Maths) industry.
STEM appealed to young people to look further at an exciting career in the area of Science Technology Engineering and Maths.
Over 100 guests, including Southern Water, Thales and the University of Sussex gathered at Collyer’s, to celebrate the support businesses in Sussex give to STEM through local schools/colleges each year. Presentation topics included ‘Working in Renewable Energy’ and ‘Getting work experience’.
Flaminia Dio, a student at Collyer’s, who wants to pursue a career in medical research said: “STEM helped me find and fund a placement in a chemistry lab at the University of Sussex. I really enjoyed the experience and it was a fantastic career opportunity.”
STEM ambassadors travel the county giving talks, helping in after school projects and offering a broad variety of useful advice on the exciting opportunities the world of STEM can offer.
Ajay Sherman, the regional director of STEMNET said: “The idea is to put the next generation of scientists in touch with the industry. We want students to become as experienced and highly educated as possible, in line with the growth in technology.”
Collyer’s Head of Physics, Joe Brock, was thrilled with the hugely successful event: “It was great to see the swell of interest in all of the STEM areas. It was an excellent event that has raised the profile of all the fantastic STEM work that is going on.”
