English Functional Skills Level 1

About the course
This course helps to develop a basic level of practical and transferable skills in English, which will be useful in work and life. There are 3 units:

  • Speaking, Listening and Communication
  • Reading
  • Writing

You will learn a range of skills including:

  • Communicating information and contributing to discussions
  • Finding analysing information in a range of texts
  • Writing letters, emails and reports
  • Using the correct grammar, spelling and punctuation

You should expect to complete 2 hours of homework per week in addition to class attendance and exam revision.

Entry requirements 
Learners must take an initial assessment followed by a full diagnostic to establish that they are ready to study at this level.

There is a controlled internal assessment for each of the 3 units.

Please bring a notebook and pen.

Learners who achieve their Level 1 qualification may progress on the English GCSE.
