About the course

This course prepares teachers and trainers to teach in a wide range of contexts in the post-16 and Adult Learning sector. There is a requirement for teaching practice that requires observation and assessment of performance.

The qualification can meet the needs of a range of trainee teachers and trainers who can meet the practice requirements, including:

Individuals who are not currently teaching
Individuals who are currently teaching, including those who have just begun teaching
Individuals currently working as assessors

Mandatory units for this course include:

Developing teaching, learning and assessment in education and training
Teaching, learning and assessment in education and training
Theories, principles and models in education and training
Wider professional practice and development in education and training

Entry requirements

You should have GCSE/Level 2 English and Maths at Grade C/4 or above and a Level 3 qualification or higher in your area of expertise.

You must have teaching work arranged prior to enrolling on the course with the students over 16 years of age. Students must complete at least 100 hours of teaching over the duration of the course.


The course is internally assessed. The overall grade is a pass, based upon successful completion of the units, a portfolio and practical teaching experience.
