News Students Learn About Fieldwork 25.10.2019

Environmental Science first year students have recently enjoyed a visit to Pulborough Brooks RSPB Reserve. Organised by Collyer’s Murray Tarvis and accompanied by Dr Ian Carr (Head of Geology and Environmental Science) and Louise Bidlake. The trip was led by the RSPB team, who introduced the students to fieldwork techniques, investigating ecological succession, habitat creation, management of heathland, and woodland management.

Dr Ian Carr said: “The students received training in fieldwork techniques including how to perform an interrupted 60m belt transect, use of quadrats to record species richness, evenness, canopy cover and tallest plant height, and the use of sweep nets to identify and record mobile organisms. These are all required practical techniques for the A-level course.

“Massive thanks to Murray, Louise and all at Pulborough Brooks RSPB Reserve. They have been incredible.”
