Collyer’s recently hosted the Festival of Science, offering students a dynamic and enriching day dedicated to exploring the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM).
To mark the occasion, regular STEM lessons were suspended, allowing students to explore a series of five engaging and thought-provoking seminars designed to deepen their subject knowledge and inspire future academic and professional pursuits within STEM fields.
This was fifth year that Collyer’s has run the event in its current format, and Collyer’s Director of Faculty for Science, Hannah Page, was thrilled with the outcome. “I am delighted that once again we were able to give our students the opportunity to consider roles and careers they might never have thought of before, and to hear from inspiring experts and professionals in such a broad range of STEM fields.”
More than 40 diverse talks covered a wide range of topics—from engineering, the application of AI, to cutting-edge mathematics research. Attendees also heard personal career journeys from professionals in fields such as astrophysics, social work, and roles at prestigious institutions like the Bank of England and Rolls-Royce. For those with more curious or unconventional interests, sessions like “Do Lobsters Have Feelings?” ensured there was truly something for everyone.
The day culminated in a high-voltage finish with the much-anticipated Science Fair, an impressive showcase of exhibitors from companies, industries and academic institutions representing a wide range of STEM-related career pathways.
Students were given the opportunity to explore everything from the science behind wine tasting with Plumpton College to discovering opportunities within the NHS. The Fair also highlighted diverse routes into apprenticeships, higher education, and employment, offering learners invaluable insights into the possibilities that lie ahead.
Hannah Page added: “The talks were incredible and there was so much amazing tech’ showcased at the Science Fair – it was really impressive to see it all in one place. Huge thanks to the staff, speakers and exhibitors who gave their time and energies to making this incredible event possible.”
