Collyer’s hosted the second event of its Aspiring Pilots Group, set up by Nikki Stone, Head of Travel & Tourism, and supported by Brianna Thorpe, Head of Physics.
Nikki Stone explained: “This initiative was created to bring together students from across the college who aspire to a career as pilots and provide them with direct access to industry professionals and practical guidance on how to succeed. The evening was exceptionally well attended, and the level of engagement from students was outstanding.”
Throughout the session, students explored practical topics such as interview techniques, how to present themselves professionally, and strategies to stand out in a competitive recruitment process. The advice shared went far beyond theory, giving students actionable steps to prepare for airline selection and assessment.
The atmosphere was dynamic and interactive, with students asking thoughtful questions and showing a genuine interest in the career journeys of aviation professionals. Feedback highlighted how valuable the event was in building confidence and clarifying what airlines look for in future pilots.
Nikki Stone added: “We were joined by a representative from the Royal Aeronautical Society, who delivered an informative presentation to set the tone for the evening. After this, students had the opportunity to network informally with pilots from British Airways, easyJet, and Virgin Atlantic, gaining first-hand insights into their experiences and receiving guidance on how to navigate the path to the flight deck.”
Collyer’s were also delighted to welcome Flight Deck Wingman and Airline Prep—organisations run by experienced airline pilots who specialise in preparing future pilots for the recruitment process. Their contribution was invaluable, offering expert advice on assessment strategies, competency-based interviews, and how to stand out during selection.
Nikki Stone was delighted: “It was fantastic to see students from across so many subjects—including Travel & Tourism, Engineering, Physics, Maths, and Media—all looking to pursue a career as a pilot. This demonstrates that the industry values more than technical ability; it seeks individuals who can show commitment, achieve academically, and remain focused on their goals.
“We can’t thank the industry professionals enough for their overwhelming response to this group, and we are looking forward to future events.”
Student feedback reflected the success of the event. Toby Betts said: “I think it worked really well having groups move between professionals for Q&A sessions. I would like to see more of this with other professionals from the industry.”
Jack Charman was also positive: “I really enjoyed the layout of the event. I feel as if going around the tables talking to different pilots really helped and meant that not everyone was asking questions at once, and you could understand the full answers from the pilots.”
Industry professionals also praised the event:
British Airways Captain Roy Findlay was impressed: “Another very interesting session, with utterly engaged students. Thank you for having me there!” While Flight Deck Wingman added: “It was a pleasure to support, Nikki. The enthusiasm from your young aspiring aviators was inspirational. Keep up the good work!”
This event truly showcased the importance of connecting students with industry professionals and provided a platform for meaningful conversations that will help shape future careers in aviation.
