News Kirsty Browns Talks”Fantastic” 07.10.2026
Collyer’s recently welcomed Anthony O’Shaughnessy (Rampion Visitor Centre) and Claire Howarth (Mott MacDonald) as part of the Kirsty Brown Talks.
Collyer’s Sustainability Co-ordinator and Assistant Director of the Science Faculty, Dr Ian Carr, was delighted: “For the first time ever there were two Kirsty Brown talks in one week! This first was a session by Anthony O’Shaughnessy from the Rampion Visitors Centre, gave a virtual online tour of a wind turbine and showed videos of tuna, dolphins and a peregrine falcon visiting the wind farm.”
Anthony, invited by Collyer’s student and documentary maker Connor Carruthers, also explained engineering solutions to seabed scour and described the environmental impact of the turbines.
On Friday Collyer’s students and staff were joined by Claire Howarth from Mott MacDonald. She described the projects that she has worked on over the years including the London Olympic site, the channel tunnel and HS2. Her work on these major engineering projects ensured that flooding does not occur.
Dr Carr added: “These were both fantastic talks that showed the students the opportunities that are available to them in Geology and Environmental Science after college.”
The Kirsty Brown series focuses on geology and the environment, in memory of geologist and marine biologist Kirsty Brown, who studied geology at Collyer’s and was also a former colleague of Dr Carr.
