About the subject

The travel and tourism sector continues to grow at a rapid pace, with the amount of travel undertaken by individuals for both leisure and business purposes continuing to increase. An expansion in the short-break market has led to a growth of regional airports in the UK and across Europe and a rise in the number of new hospitality enterprises including health spas and boutique hotels. This rapid expansion has led to huge demand for a more flexibly skilled workforce.  These qualifications have been designed to provide an all-round introduction to the travel and tourism sector for those who wish to further their careers in one of its many connected industries, including retail travel, visitor attractions, accommodation, transport and tour operations.

The course uses real life events to expand on the theories learnt in the classroom.  It works closely with recognised travel companies such Virgin, British Airways, Easyjet, TUI and  various organisations at Gatwick Airport such as Menzies Aviation and DHL. We also work closely with locals hotels such as The Hilton Gatwick.


Learning styles

Teachers will use a wide variety of different strategies to help students learn including educational visits to tourist attractions, guest speakers, video input, role plays and formal teaching. Students are required to research current issues affecting the industry using a range of sources; books, video, internet and interviews to produce analytical assignments.  Students will be expected to present their work in a variety of methods including externally assessed exams,  formal presentations, role plays and written assignments.

Subject Combinations and Progression

The qualification is ideal for students who prefer coursework based subjects and are interested in the industry. Students can pursue Travel and Tourism with 2 other A Level course’s, for those who wish to progress to a travel related undergraduate programme at university, a language or business studies course would be appropriate. For those who wish to go directly into employment similar A Levels or industry courses such as Cabin Crew would be an option.
