  • Speaking, Listening and Communication
  • Reading
  • Writing

You will learn a range of skills including:

  • Communicating information and contributing to discussions
  • Reading and understanding information in a range of texts
  • Writing letters, emails and reports
  • Using correct grammar, spelling and punctuation.

You should expect to complete 2 hours of homework per week in addition to class attendance and exam revision.

Entry requirements

No previous knowledge is required. Students who apply to study these courses with us will be invited to attend a session at the college to complete an online assessment. This will show us which level you are ready to study at.

Learners will attend weekly lessons in college. This course may incorporate an element of live remote lessons where appropriate.   It is recommended that you have access to a PC, laptop or other suitable device.

Learners also benefit from access to the college library during our evening opening times, including computers, study stations, print-based and electronic learning materials, printers and scanners.

There are three assessments for these courses: a speaking and listening assessment; a reading exam and a writing exam. Exams at Entry Level 3 are paper based; exams at Level 1 and Level 2 are online. All assessments and exams will take place during the evening.

Learners may progress on to the next level Functional Skills course or GCSE English.
