About the Course

This qualification develops the skills students need to read, understand and analyse a range of 19th, 20th and 21st century texts, as well as to write coherently and accurately using a range of sentence structures and vocabulary. Content includes:

  • Critical reading and comprehension
  • Summarising ideas and synthesising from more than one text
  • Evaluating author vocabulary, grammar and structure
  • Comparing texts
  • Producing clear and coherent text
  • Writing to persuade and inform
  • Creative Writing

 

Grades 9-1 are available for students.

 

You should expect to complete 3 hours of homework per week in addition to class attendance and exam revision

Entry requirements

Students who apply to study these courses with us will be invited to attend a session at the college to complete an online assessment. This will show us which level you are ready to study at.

This course is likely to be suitable for learners who have recent experience of studying English either at Functional Skills or GCSE level.

Assessment

Students will sit the national public GCSE exams in accordance with the timetable set by the Awarding Body.  These take place outside of normal lesson times, during the day. Students will also sit an internal Spoken Language assessment during normal lesson time.

Delivery

Learners will attend weekly lessons in college. This course may incorporate an element of live remote lessons where appropriate.   It is recommended that you have access to a PC, laptop or other suitable device.

Learners also benefit from access to the college library during our evening opening times, including computers, study stations, print-based and electronic learning materials, printers and scanners.

Progression

This course will help you with employment or further education.

Induction

Students are required to attend a college induction on the first evening of the course

Fees

This is a free course (fully funded) for UK residents who have lived in the UK for the last 3 years and who do not already have an equivalent qualification. For funding options for EEA nationals and non-UK national citizens see our Fees and Funding page.
