News Shooting Stars! 02.02.2026
Media students from Collyer’s recently took part in an inspiring, hands‑on filmmaking workshop at BIMM University Studios Brighton, gaining valuable industry experience as they created their own silent film sequences on a professional production set.
Collyer’s Head of BTEC Creative Media, Rebecca Moon, explained: “The immersive workshop placed students at the heart of a working studio environment, giving them access to state‑of‑the‑art equipment, lighting setups, and production workflows used in contemporary film practice.
“This opportunity directly supports their upcoming coursework unit, enabling them to explore practical techniques in visual storytelling, performance, and production design.”
Throughout the day, students worked closely with industry professionals and MetFilm School lecturers Jamie Patterson and April Pearson, who guided them through each stage of the filmmaking process. Under their mentorship, the group developed, rehearsed, filmed, and edited a short silent sequence, with each student starring in their own piece and returning to college with fresh, high‑quality material for their individual showreels.
Rebecca said: “Jamie Patterson and April Pearson are hugely inspiring and incredible practitioners. They brought their extensive industry insight to the workshop, helping students understand not only how to operate within a professional set, but also how to elevate their creative decisions, work collaboratively, and communicate effectively in a fast‑paced production environment.”
Film and BTEC Media student Oscar Lavictoire enjoyed the workshop: “It was a good insight into the world of production. I enjoyed working in a production environment as well as combining my interest in screen acting.”
Media student Cameron Chisholm said: “I found the trip highly educational and fun, as it allows you to experiment with high quality set and equipment. I will definitely take this experience with me for my unit 10 film project.”
Rebecca praised the impact of the visit: “Experiences like this are invaluable. Our students were able to step into real industry roles for the day, gain confidence on a professional set, and come away with footage they can proudly use in their coursework and future applications.”
The trip marks another successful collaboration between Collyer’s Creative Media department and local industry partners committed to supporting the next generation of filmmakers, storytellers, and media professionals.
Collyer’s Vice Principal (Curriculum) Rob Hussey was thrilled: “Colossal thanks to everyone at the Met Film School University Studios Brighton for making this fantastic educational experience possible. Our talented media students were incredibly focussed and are a huge credit to Collyer’s. They are shooting stars!”
