News University of Portsmouth Host Collyer’s Students 05.06.2026
Thirty Biology students from Collyer’s recently visited the University of Portsmouth for an exciting day of experiments. They had the opportunity to carry out complex biological techniques linked to the A Level specification. Working in small groups, students completed Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) and gel electrophoresis to solve questions posed by the university team. They also explored the control of embryo development and how it relates to current research projects.
Claire Pickens, Collyer’s Joint Head of Biology, said: “The group engaged brilliantly throughout the day and showed real enthusiasm for the practical elements. Students demonstrated excellent teamwork, listened carefully to instructions, and showed growing confidence using advanced laboratory equipment. It was great to see them making clear links between the activities and their A Level learning.”
Biology student Libby Wright said: “I enjoyed the opportunity to get hands on experience with practical techniques in a university environment. It was a really interesting day.”
Caroline Birch, Collyer’s Joint-Head of Biology added: “Thank you to Dr. Frank Schubert, Dr. Kenneth Wasmund, and the wider University of Portsmouth staff for their exceptional support throughout the visit. Their expertise, enthusiasm, and warm welcome made the day both engaging and inspiring for our students.”
Collyer’s Vice Principal (Curriculum) Rob Hussey said: “Colossal thanks to Caroline, Claire and all at University of Portsmouth for making this wonderfully positive educational experience possible.”
