Art and Design BTEC Level 2 First
About this subject
This art and design qualification has been developed to focus on education and training for students who wish to go on to further education in the arts and seek a career within the art and design industries.
This one year non-endorsed pathway, (3 x GCSE equivalent) is designed for learners with a broad interest in art and design. Students will develop a range of skills and techniques, personal qualities and attitudes essential for successful performance in working in the arts. It allows them to explore key aspects of art and design practice and to gain fundamental skills in practical areas.
Students will develop fundamental skills involving 2D and 3D media and knowledge from an art and design practitioner’s viewpoint. They will focus on the development of wider key skills in a design context; such as improving own learning and performance, working with others and problem solving.
A variety of different teaching and learning styles including whole class exposition, discussion and group work. Students will also be expected to develop independent study skills. They will be encouraged to have a degree of autonomy and gain confidence in seeking out information and research material. The courses would be worth three subject blocks of time in the Collyer’s timetable
Subject Combinations and Progression
The course fits well with students wishing to re-take Maths and English GCSE. It can also be taken some AS Levels in subjects where the entry requirement has been met. Students successfully achieving Merit overall can then progress onto level 3 courses at Collyer’s.

The course covers 9 units, 7 of which are internally assessed coursework, the other 2 are externally assessed examinations.

The 9 units have a total combination of 360 GLH.
